| biography:
| Iranian politician, and first president of the Islamic Republic of Iran (1980–1), associated with Ayatollah Khomeini from 1966. He studied economics and sociology at the Sorbonne in Paris, having fled there in 1963 after a brief imprisonment in Iran for involvement in riots against the Shah's regime. An important figure in the Iranian Revolution of 1978–9, he was soon criticized by the fundamentalists and dismissed by Ayatollah Khomeini (mid-1981). He fled to France where he was granted asylum. |
