| biography:
| Writer, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The son of Jewish Russian parents, he received his Dutch citizenship in 1918. He studied law in Amsterdam, worked as a lawyer and solicitor, and became director of the Dutch Zionist Society (1934–9). Much of his literary work recalls his experiences in the War and in the concentration camp Bergen-Belsen. He wrote a diary, essays, plays, and novels, and among his prizes were the Contantijn Huygensprijs for his whole oeuvre in 1964 and the P C Hooft-prijs for his essays in 1972. |
