| Man of letters, born in Paris, France, the son of the architect Pierre Hermant (1823–1903). He resigned from the École Normale Supérieure to dedicate himself to literature. Le Cavalier Miseray appeared in 1887 and Les Confidences d'une biche in 1909. He searched for perfection of style, tried different schools (naturalist, impressionist, psychological, historical) and became a critical chronicler in Le Songe de Napoléon and Mémoires pour servir à l'Histoire de la société. Les Transatlantiques (1897) described the world of travel. In 1927 he was elected to the Académie Française, but was later expelled. |
