| Poet, novelist, and essayist, born in Poitiers, W France. He won the national poetry prize with his first collection of poems, Les Familiers (1906), and took up the psychological novel with La Vie et l'amour (1913, Life and Love). He was minister of education in the Vichy government (1942–4), fled to Spain and was sentenced to death in his absence (1945). He returned to France (1958) and was banished (1960). |
