| Educationist, born in Versailles, NC France. In 1765 he began to educate two deaf and dumb sisters, and invented a language of signs. He also pioneered the use of ‘spatial aids’ to assist the memorizing of vocabulary by associating words with particular locations in space. His attempts succeeding, at his own expense he founded a deaf and dumb institute, which was converted into a public institution two years after his death. |
