| The last khedive of Egypt (1892–1914). He succeeded his father, Tewfik Pasha, and at first attempted to rule independently of British influence. At the outbreak of war in 1914 he happened to be in Turkey. The British did not allow him to return, and deposed him when they made Egypt a protectorate (1914). |
