| Khedive of Egypt from 1848. A grandson of Mohammed Ali, he took an active part in his uncle Ibrahim's Syrian war. Later he undid some of his grandfather's reforms, but did allow the building of the first railway in Egypt from Alexandria to Cairo. He died under mysterious circumstances. |
