| biography:
| Novelist, born in Geldrop, S Netherlands. He is considered one of the great writers of contemporary Dutch literature. He made his debut in 1978 with the collected short stories, Een gondel in de Herengracht (A Gondola in the Herengracht) under the pseudonym Patrizio Canaponi. Under his own name, he began a majestic trilogy which soon grew into four volumes. This work, De tandeloze tijd (The Toothless Time), describes the life and times of Albert Egbers from his youth in a provincial town to his existence as a drug addict in Amsterdam. Although the story is obscured by the writer's use of symbols and metaphors, side-stories, and shifting perspective, the overall picture is gradually revealed and considered to be an accurate description of life in the 1980s. |
