| Writer, born in Haarlem, W Netherlands. His first work De eilanden (1952, The Islands) draws inspiration from his professional career as a civil servant. He became known with his short novel De vergaderzaal (1974, The Conference Room) which was adapted for television. In addition to fiction with autobiographical elements, he wrote strictly autobiographical work, including Een kolonie is ook maar een mens (1989, A Colony is Only Human), centring around his days in the former Netherlands East Indies during World War 2. In 1975 he received the Constantijn Huygensprijs, and in 1995, shortly before his death, the P C Hooft-prijs. |
