| biography:
| Scottish royalist, born in Dalkeith, Midlothian, EC Scotland, UK. He was imprisoned by Cromwell for a suspected royalist plot (1657–60), but his titles were restored after the Restoration. In 1681 he opposed the Test Act, and was sentenced to death for treason, but escaped to Holland. In 1685, he conspired with Monmouth to overthrow the king; he landed in Scotland, but failed to rouse the Covenanters to his cause, and was executed. |
