| biography:
| British general, born in Hambleden, Buckinghamshire, SC England, UK. He studied at Oxford, entered the army in 1824, and purchased his promotion, commanding the 15th Hussars (until 1833), then the 11th Hussars (1836–47). He commanded a cavalry brigade in the Crimea, and led the fatal charge of the Light Brigade at Balaclava (25 Oct 1854). He then became inspector-general of cavalry (1855–60). The woollen jacket known as a cardigan is named after him. |
