| biography:
| British soldier, born at Hamsterley Hall, Durham, NE England, UK. He trained at the Royal Military College, Woolwich, served with the Grenadier Guards in World War 1, and was awarded the VC in 1918. He was appointed Chief of the Imperial General Staff in 1938. In World War 2 he was commander-in-chief of the British forces overwhelmed in the initial German victories of 1940. Afterwards he was Governor of Gibraltar (1941–2) and of Malta (1942–4), and was promoted field marshal in 1943. He later became high commissioner for Palestine and Transjordan (1944–5). |
