| Stately home operator, born in Longleat House, Warminster, Wiltshire, S England, UK. He inherited the family Elizabethan manor house, containing a fine art collection and library but in a poor state of repair. Faced with crippling death duties, he caused a sensation by opening the house to the paying public as a tourist attraction in 1949. He introduced lions and other wild animals to the estate grounds in the 1960s, creating the first safari park. |
