| British statesman and prime minister (1894–5), born in London, UK. He studied at Oxford, succeeded to the earldom in 1868, and after holding various educational and political posts, became foreign secretary (1886, 1892–4) under Gladstone, whom he succeeded as premier for a brief period before the Liberals lost the election of 1895. He was noted for his racehorse stables, and in his later years as a biographer of British statesmen. |
