| British politician, remembered as the inventor of sandwiches, which he supposedly devised in order to eat while playing around the clock at a gaming-table. He was First Lord of the Admiralty under both Henry Pelham and Lord North (1748–51, 1771–82), and was frequently attacked for corruption and incompetence. The Sandwich (Hawaiian) Is were name after him by Captain Cook. |
