| English statesman, orator, and man of letters, born in London, UK. He studied at Cambridge, travelled in Europe, and became an MP (1715). In 1726 he succeeded his father as earl and became ambassador to Holland. He returned to England and parliament as a bitter antagonist of Robert Walpole, joined the Pelham ministry (1744), and became Irish lord-lieutenant (1745), and one of the principal secretaries of state (1746–8). Intimate with Swift, Pope, and other contemporary authors, his own best-known work was his guide to men's manners and worldly success, Letters to his Son (1774). |
