| English soldier and patron of the arts. He studied at Cambridge, was created Knight of the Bath (1610), Viscount Mansfield in 1620, and Earl (1628), Marquess (1643), and Duke (1665) of Newcastle. He gave strong support to Charles I in the Civil War, and was general of all forces north of the Trent. After Marston Moor (1644) he lived on the European mainland, at times in great poverty, until the Restoration. A noted patron of poets and playwrights, he was himself the author of several plays, and of two works on horsemanship. |
