| biography:
| British statesman and prime minister (1885–6, 1886–92, 1895–1902), born in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, SE England, UK. He studied at Oxford, and became a Conservative MP in 1853. In 1865 he was made Viscount Cranborne, and in 1868 Marquess of Salisbury. He was twice Indian secretary (1866, 1874), became foreign secretary (1878), and on Disraeli's death (1881) was Leader of the Opposition. He was prime minister on three occasions, much of the time serving as his own foreign secretary. He resigned as foreign secretary in 1900, but remained as head of government during the Boer War (1899–1902). He retired in 1902. |
