| biography:
| Courtier, born in Cowdray, Sussex, S England, UK. He was known as a patron of poets, notably of Shakespeare, who dedicated to him both Venus and Adonis (1593) and The Rape of Lucrece (1594). Some scholars have maintained that Southampton is the patron and friend described in Shakespeare's sonnets. He became involved in the rebellion of Essex (1600), and was imprisoned, but released by James I. He died while in charge of English volunteers against Spain in Holland. |
