| English poet. He was a patron of Ben Jonson, Massinger, and Inigo Jones, and a lord chamberlain of the court (1615–30). He became Chancellor of Oxford University in 1617, and Pembroke College is named after him. Shakespeare's ‘W H’, the ‘onlie begetter’ of the Sonnets has been taken by some to refer to him. |
