| biography:
| British statesman and prime minister (1762–3), born in Edinburgh, EC Scotland. UK. After early court appointments, he became a favourite of George III, who made him one of the principal secretaries of state (1761). As prime minister, his government was highly unpopular. Its principal objective was the supremacy of the royal prerogative, and he was soon forced to resign. From 1768 his life was chiefly spent in the country, where he engaged in scientific study. |
