| biography:
| British statesman, born in London, UK. He studied at Oxford, was called to the bar (1932), and became an MP (1938). He succeeded to his title in 1950, and was First Lord of the Admiralty (1956–7), minister of education (1957), Lord President of the Council (1957–9, 1960–4), chairman of the Conservative Party (1957–9), minister for science and technology (1959–64), and secretary of state for education and science (1964). In 1963 he renounced his peerage and re-entered the House of Commons in an unsuccessful bid to become leader of the Conservative Party. In 1970 he was created a life peer (Baron Hailsham of Saint Marylebone) and became Lord Chancellor (1970–4), a post he held again from 1979 until his retirement in 1987. |
