| British politician, born in New York City, USA, the son of William Waldorf Astor, 1st Viscount. He studied at Oxford, and was elected MP for Plymouth in 1910. On passing to the House of Lords in 1919 he became parliamentary secretary to the local government board (later the Ministry of Health) and his wife, Nancy Astor, succeeded him in the lower house. He was proprietor of The Observer. |
