| biography:
| British statesman and prime minister (1782–3), born in Dublin, Ireland. He studied at Oxford, entered parliament, succeeded to his earldom in 1761, and became President of the Board of Trade (1763) and secretary of state (1766). Made premier on the death of Rockingham, he resigned when outvoted by the coalition between Fox and North. In 1784 he was made Marquess of Lansdowne. |
