| biography:
| Anglo-Norman nobleman. With the permission of Henry II he helped the dethroned Irish king, Dermot MacMurrough, in 1167, in his bid to reclaim Leinster and Wexford from Rory O'Connor, King of Connaught. Strongbow captured Waterford in 1170, married Eva, the eldest daughter of MacMurrough and, having subdued much of E Ireland, was confirmed by Henry II as King of Leinster, assuring by his marriage and his military conquests Anglo-Norman domination of Ireland. Strongbow fought for Henry in Normandy (1173) and was rewarded by the restoration of Waterford, Wexford, and Dublin, marching into Munster in 1174. He continued fighting the Irish until his death in 1176. |
