| biography:
| Parliamentary soldier, born in London, UK. He studied at Cambridge, accompanied Prince Charles to Spain (1623), and was raised to the House of Lords as Viscount Mandeville (1626). In 1642 he was impeached by the king, acquitted, and succeeded his father as 2nd Earl. In the Civil War he served under Essex at Edgehill. He defeated the royalists at Newbury, but Cromwell accused him of military incompetence. Deprived of his command (1645), he opposed the trial of the king, protested against the Commonwealth, and was made Lord Chamberlain at the Restoration (1660). |
