| biography:
| English statesman and playwright, born in London, UK. After his father's assassination, he was brought up with Charles I's children, and went into exile after the Royalist defeat in the Civil War. His estates were recovered at the Restoration, and he became a member of the Cabal of Charles II. He was instrumental in Clarendon's downfall (1667), but lost power to Arlington, and was dismissed in 1674 for alleged Catholic sympathies. He wrote poetry, religious tracts, and plays, among them a celebrated satire on heroic drama, The Rehearsal (1671). |
