| Scottish Unionist, one of the strongest supporters of the Act of Union of 1707, born in Petersham, SW Greater London, UK. An outstanding soldier, he took part in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–13). At the time of the Jacobite rising in Scotland (1715–16) he commanded the Hanoverian forces that dispersed the Jacobite troops without a battle. |
