| British field marshal, born in Golden Bridge, Ireland. He joined the army in 1852, and served in the Burmese War (1852–3), the Crimea (where he lost an eye), the Indian Mutiny (1857), and the Chinese War (1860). He put down the Red River rebellion (1870) in Canada, and commanded in the Ashanti War (1873). After other posts in India, Cyprus, South Africa, and Egypt, he led the attempted rescue of General Gordon at Khartoum. He became a baron (1882) and, after the Sudan campaign (1884–5), a viscount. As army commander-in-chief (1895–1901), he carried out several reforms, and mobilized forces for the Boer War (1899–1902). |
