| British statesman, born in S Wales, UK. He studied at Southampton, and was a schoolteacher before becoming a Labour MP (1945). He held various junior posts before becoming secretary of state for Wales (1968–70), deputy speaker, and chairman of the ways and means committee (1974–76). He is chiefly remembered as a popular Speaker of the House of Commons (1976–83). He was elevated to the peerage in 1983. |
