| biography:
| British statesman and prime minister (1801–4), born in London, UK. He studied at Oxford, left law for politics, and became an MP in 1783. He was Speaker of the House (1789–1801) when, upon Pitt's resignation, he was invited to form a Tory ministry. His administration negotiated the Peace of Amiens (1802), which held for barely a year. His government ended in 1804, when he was created a viscount. He later became home secretary under Liverpool (1812–21), unpopular for coercive measures such as the Six Acts of 1819. |
