| biography:
| Coal mine owner, financier, and politician, born in Ysgyborwen, Rhondda, Cynon Taff, S Wales. He studied at Cambridge, and became Liberal MP for Merthyr Tydfil (1888–1910). During World War 1, he was sent to the USA by Lloyd George to negotiate the supply of munitions to Britain. His success led to a peerage, and was followed by an equally successful period as minister of food (1917–18), with the introduction of war-time food rationing. |
