| biography:
| British admiral, born in Thorncombe, Dorset, S England, UK. He joined the navy in 1741, and fought during the American Revolution, when he defeated the French in the West Indies (1782), for which he was made a baron in the Irish peerage. In 1784 he became an MP, and in 1788 a Lord of the Admiralty. In 1793, he directed the occupation of Toulon and the operations in the Gulf of Lyon. He was created a viscount in 1796. |
