| Australian statesman and prime minister (1923–9), born in Melbourne, Victoria, SE Australia. He entered parliament in 1918, and represented Australia in the League of Nations Assembly. After serving as prime minister, he was high commissioner in London (1933–45), and represented Australia at meetings of Churchill's war cabinet. He settled in England for the last 20 years of his life. |
