| Northern Ireland statesman and prime minister (1943–63), born in Fermanagh, SW Northern Ireland, UK. Elected to the Northern Ireland parliament in 1929, he became minister of agriculture (1933), of commerce (1941), and prime minister of the province, resigning in 1963. He was a staunch supporter of Unionist policy, determined to preserve the ties between Northern Ireland and the UK. He was created a viscount in 1952. |
