| biography:
| English naval commander, the brother of Samuel, 1st Viscount Hood. He entered the navy in 1741, and in 1761 recaptured from the French the Warwick, a 60-gun ship. During the French Revolutionary Wars he served under Richard, 1st Earl Howe, in the Channel and the Strait of Gibraltar, and took part in the ‘Glorious First of June’ engagement off Ushant in 1794. He later became commander-in-chief of the Channel fleet (1797–1800). |
