| biography:
| Canadian statesman and prime minister (1930–5), born in New Brunswick, E Canada. A lawyer by training, he was elected to parliament in 1911, and became Conservative leader from 1927. As prime minister, he convened the Empire Economic Conference in Ottawa in 1932, out of which came a system of empire trade preference known as the Ottawa Agreements. He retired to Britain in 1939, and was made a peer in 1941. |
