| Newspaper proprietor, born in New York City, USA, a great-grandson of John Jacob Astor, the fur trader. Defeated in the election for governor of New York State (1881), he was US minister to Italy (1882–5). He emigrated to Britain in 1892 and bought the Pall Mall Gazette and Pall Mall Magazine. He became a British citizen in 1899, bought The Observer in 1911, and was made a viscount in 1917. |
