| biography:
| Soap-maker and philanthropist, born in Bolton, Greater Manchester, NW England, UK. In 1886, with his brother, James Darcy Lever, he started the manufacture of soap from vegetable oils instead of tallow. He turned the small soap works into a national business through skilled advertising and continuous consideration for the customer and his staff, founding the model industrial new town of Port Sunlight. He was made a baron in 1917, and a viscount in 1922. Among his many benefactions, he endowed to Liverpool University a school of tropical medicine, and Lancaster House to the nation. |
