| Chief of British air staff during World War 2, born in Hungerford, West Berkshire, S England, UK. He studied at Oxford, joined the Royal Engineers (1914), and was commissioned, then served in the Royal Flying Corps (1915–18). Promoted air vice-marshal in 1937, he became director of organization at the Air Ministry (1937–8), commander-in-chief of Bomber Command (1940), and chief of air staff (1940–6). After the War he was controller of the Atomic Energy Authority (1946–51), and became chairman of the British Aircraft Corporation in 1960. He was created a baron in 1945, and viscount in 1946. |
