| biography:
| Jurist and statesman, born in London, UK. He studied in London, Brussels, and Hanover, entered parliament as Liberal member for Reading in 1904, and also gained a reputation as an advocate. In 1910 he was appointed solicitor general and later attorney general, and became a member of the Cabinet in 1912. Appointed Lord Chief Justice in 1913, he was special envoy to the USA in World War 1, British ambassador in Washington (1918–21), and Viceroy of India (1921–6). Although he normally preferred conciliation, he sometimes took summary action, such as the imprisonment of Mahatma Gandhi in 1922 and the use of force against Muslim separatists and Sikh rebels in the Punjab. Created marquess on his return, he took charge of many business concerns, including the chairmanship of United Newspapers Ltd and the presidency of Imperial Chemical Industries. His wife, Stella, founded the Women's Royal Voluntary Service. |
