| biography:
| Scottish soldier and royalist. He studied at St Andrews and travelled in Europe, returning in 1637, and was one of the four noblemen who drew up the National Covenant in support of Presbyterianism (1638). He served in the Covenanter army in 1640, but transferred his allegiance to Charles I, and led the Royalist army to victory at Tippermuir (1644). After the Royalist defeat at Naseby (1645), his army became disaffected, and his remaining force was defeated at Philiphaugh. He fled to Europe, returning to Scotland after Charles's execution to avenge his death; but his army was largely lost by shipwreck, and the remnant defeated at Invercharron (1650). He was taken prisoner, and hanged in Edinburgh. |
