| biography:
| British naval commander, born in Graz, SE Austria, the son of Prince Alexander of Hesse. He became a naturalized British subject and entered the Royal Navy in 1868. He served with distinction as a commodore in the Mediterranean fleet, and as director of naval intelligence. He was First Sea Lord at the outbreak of World War 1, but was forced to resign because of anti-German prejudice. By royal command he gave up his German titles in 1917, changed the family name from Battenberg to Mountbatten, and was created Marquess of Milford Haven. He was promoted admiral in 1919. |
