| biography:
| English statesman, born in Thornhill, West Yorkshire, N England, UK. He was created viscount (1668) for his share in the Restoration, and in 1672 was made a marquess and Lord Privy Seal. On the accession of James II (1685) he became president of the Council, but was dismissed soon after. He was one of the three Commissioners appointed to treat with William of Orange after he landed in England (1688). He gave allegiance to William and resumed the office of Lord Privy Seal; but, joining the Opposition, resigned his post in 1689. |
