| biography:
| British administrator, born in Dangan, Co Meath, E Ireland, the brother of Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington. He became an MP (1784), a Lord of the Treasury (1786), a marquess (1799), and governor-general of India (1797–1805). Under his administration British rule in India became supreme: the influence of France was extinguished, and the power of the princes reduced by the crushing of Tippoo Sahib (1799) and the Marathas (1803). After his return to England, he became ambassador to Madrid (1805), foreign minister (1809), and Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland (1821, 1833). |
