| biography:
| British admiral, born in Barnwell, Northamptonshire, C England, UK. In the Civil War he fought on the parliamentary side as a soldier at Marston Moor (1644), sat in parliament (1645–8), shared the command of the fleet with Blake from 1653, and fought in the first Dutch War. For services in the restoration of the monarchy (1660), he was appointed Admiral of the Narrow Seas. As ambassador to Spain (1666–9), he helped to negotiate Charles II's marriage, and escorted Catherine of Braganza to England. In the third Dutch War (1672–8) he fought in the Battle of Southwold Bay, and was blown up with his flagship, the Royal James. |
