| biography:
| Knight, and regent of England (1216–19), a nephew of the Earl of Salisbury. He won a military reputation fighting the French, supported Henry II against Richard I, and went on a crusade to the Holy Land. Pardoned by Richard, he was made an earl, appointed a justiciar, and shared the marshalcy of England with his brother, John, until the latter's death gave him full office. He saw further fighting in Normandy (1196–9), supported the new king (John) but spent the years 1207–12 in Ireland, returning to become the king's chief adviser. After John's death in 1216, he was appointed regent for the nine-year-old Henry III, and as such concluded a peace treaty with the French. |
