| biography:
| English Whig statesman, born in Horton, Northamptonshire, C England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, became MP for Maldon (1688) and a Lord of the Treasury (1692), establishing the National Debt and the Bank of England (1694). As Chancellor of the Exchequer (1694–5), he introduced a new coinage. In 1697 he was First Lord of the Treasury and Leader of the House of Commons, but resigned when the Tories came to power in 1699, and became Baron Halifax. On Queen Anne's death he was made a member of the Council of Regency, and on George I's arrival (1714) became an earl and prime minister. He was also a patron of letters and a poet. |
