| biography:
| English statesman, born near Helston, Cornwall, SW England, UK. He entered parliament (1668), visited Holland (1678), and was made head of the Treasury and a baron (1684). He stood by James II when William of Orange landed (1668), and voted for a regency; yet in 1689 William reinstated him as First Commissioner of the Treasury. He was ousted in 1696, but made Lord High Treasurer by Queen Anne (1702), and created an earl (1706). His able management of the finances helped Marlborough in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–13), but court intrigues led to his dismissal in 1710. |
