| biography:
| English statesman and poet, born in Buckhurst, Sussex, England, UK. He became a lawyer and entered parliament (1558), then collaborated with Thomas Norton (1532–84) in the tragedy Gorboduc (1561), the first English play in blank verse. Knighted in 1567, he later became a diplomat in Europe, Lord High Treasurer (1599), and an earl (1604). |
